The future of Bologna, 10 years on

Lisbon, 21st - 22nd of September 2009

On the 19th of June 1999, ministers responsible for higher education of 29 European countries signed the Bologna Declaration. At the end of a 10 years’ period of implementation, it is time to produce a balance of the results achieved, both in Portugal and in the remaining European Higher Education Area. It is also time to analyse how the Bologna Process is viewed in other regions of the World and to develop a mutual understanding of motivations and processes, as a basis for policy dialog and cooperation. Finally, it is the moment to consider how the Bologna goals may be pursued in the future.

In conformity the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (FCG) will organize an international conference on the 21st and 22nd of September 2009 where the Portuguese and European Academic Community and also participants from outside the European Area of Higher Education will be invited to consider three topics:

  • The curricular design in the Bologna context
  • The Bologna Process in a global setting
  • The future, 10 years after Bologna.

Connected to the preparation of the conference the Foundation financed an analysis of the Bologna Reports that institutions were required by law to produce in order to evaluate the implementation of the Bologna Objectives.

The objectives of the analysys are:

  • Identify the most significative changes taking place both at the institutional level and classroom level, induced by the implementation of Bologna
  • Compile a best-practice catalog on Bologna Implementation by the portuguese institutions.
  • Propor uma metodologia e modelo para futuros relatórios que permitam melhorar a comparabilidade entre instituições.
  • Propose a new metodology and template for future reporst in order to improve comparability.

The final results of the analysis will be presented during the conference.
